In Mrs. Dixon's Digital Marketing class, students were divided into groups and chose a particular food product to complete a market research study on. The product chosen also had to have a generic of that same product on the market. The products chosen were: Hot Pocket Pepperoni & Cheese vs. Great Value Pepperoni & Cheese Filled Sandwiches; Claussen Kosher Dill Pickles vs. Great Value Kosher Dill Pickles;
Velveeta Shells & Cheese Cups vs. Great Value Shells and Cheese Cups; Doritos Cool Ranch Chips vs. Great Value Glacier Ranch Chips; Coca Cola vs. Sam's Cola; Pure Leaf Sweet Tea vs. Great Value Sweet Tea; Cheez-It vs. Great Value Cheddar Cheese Crackers; Chips Ahoy Original Cookies vs. Great Value Classic Chippers Cookies; Fruit Loops vs. Great Value Fruit Spins.
They had to research the target market, mission/vision statement, marketing strategy, and competitors. Once they did their research, they performed a taste test on the name brand versus generic product. Each group had to create a survey for their classmates to fill out. The survey included questions such as "Which product did you prefer more? Product A or Product B". Students also gained a better understanding on how to create a survey and manage the survey results. Once the taste test part was completed, each group presented their market research, taste test survey results, advertisements, and QR codes to the class.
It was very interesting to see which product students preferred more without knowing which product they were tasting. Watching SHS students put their creativity skills to work was incredible, as they did an amazing job researching their chosen products and presenting them to the class. The best part of all is that they had fun while learning.
